Becoming an industry specialist

Think of all the large, successful companies around the globe. The one thing that most of them have in common is the fact that they are industry leaders – specialising in a particular market and becoming the authority within that sector.

We have all heard the phrase, “jack of all trades, master of none” at some point in our life. However, in today’s modern world, lots of people are concentrating on becoming specialists in one particular area. The focus of today’s blog is to highlight why as a business owner, you may want to become a specialist in a given area instead of applying your knowledge thinly across a broad range of sectors.

Individuals that are regarded as industry specialists are often able to command higher fees and build a loyal customer base. Their customers are willing to pay a premium for the greater relevance and customisation that the specialist’s advice, products or services bring to their business.

At this point, it is important to consider how you could reap additional benefit by becoming an expert or a specialist provider to a particular industry. To become a real specialist you need to keep track of what is driving your specialist market sector. You also need to build credibility and a track record. Try to gain as much knowledge as possible, build useful contacts and spot potential leads.

Some of the key ways to build your industry specialism include:

• Attending the industry trade events such as exhibitions
• Reading the key trade press in that sector
• Joining communities or smaller interest groups within the industry face to face

You can then apply the knowledge you have gained to tailor your products and services to be more relevant to the challenges that businesses in that industry face. Highlighting your expertise and specialist knowledge through a wide variety of communication channels can give you greater authority in your industry sector. You could communicate this expertise via:

• Your website
• Blogs
• Social media
• Press releases or interviews

Avoid blatantly selling, instead be an authority on a number of issues affecting the industry and offer solutions. By demonstrating your interest and passion for the industry, you will build a loyal following. Becoming a specialist can often bring a better return on investment than a generalist approach as it allows you to focus your time, effort and money.
