Why Geometric Shapes in Web Design Aren’t Going Anywhere

They’ve been a staple of most areas of design for a good couple of years now, and their widespread use today means that the geometric design isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. However, though our love of geometric patterns and shapes hasn’t decreased, it’s true to say that our use of such design techniques has evolved. Combining the use of geometric patterns and shapes with different techniques allows for a future-proof, modern take on the web design trend.

Organic shapes The beauty and fascination of the geometric shape lies in how often it’s seen and brought to life daily. From the hexagonal shape of the beehive to the intricate spirals of a shell, we’re always fascinated by how such precision and order can be born from something as random and chaotic as nature. Geometric shapes are, at their heart, organic shapes, but the lines and edges that form them can be combined to make patterns that are perhaps more interesting to look at.Combining the two together is a great way to keep web design engaging. Take geometrical shapes like sharp rectangles, triangles and pentagons for buttons and calls-to-action, and layer them on top of more curved, blob-like shapes for an attractive visual flow. Use of colour Colour is a great way to update or strip back the look of something and modernise it, and geometric shapes are no exception. An effective way of using colour is by its absence; many websites are going with simple, plain white backgrounds to simplify user-experience and bring content into the forefront. In these cases, simple stylistic additions such as bold, black lines or shapes in between imagery or areas of text add a timeless and stylish look to any responsive web page design. On the opposite end of the spectrum - quite literally - is the gradient. The gradient has been very popular so far in 2018 and has been used to style geometrical shapes with fantastic effect. This web design technique can be subtle too if the contrast between colours within the gradient isn’t too extreme. Mix with animation A fantastic device that’s used in web design more and more is animation. Animation adds life and attention-grabbing interactivity to a website, which can be used not only to engage the audience but inspire repeat visits and shares. To create a fluid user-journey to your most important pages, use geometric patterns of colour that animate with a simple scroll of the mouse to point towards calls-to-action.
