Top tips for boosting app revenue

Rebecca Appleton • 16 March 2018

With over 6 million mobile apps currently on the market and an industry that is set to be worth over $189 billion by 2020, there is a lot of revenue to be made by creative app developers and budding entrepreneurs. If you’ve already developed an app business but you’re looking for ways to expand your brand, these great tips will help you retain more users and increase your revenue streams.

Change your ad strategy

Ads are a big part of mobile apps and are used by many developers generate revenue. However, if you find that your numbers are lacking, it may be that your strategy is ineffective. It might seem like a good idea to simply cram your app full of adverts but that will often drive away more users. Choosing the right time for your ads to pop up is a vital part of improving the user experience.

Make it a paid app

Although the majority of mobile apps currently on the market are free, there are still plenty of mobile users that buy paid-apps every day. Whether you’re in the process of releasing your app or you need to boost falling revenue figures, charging a reasonable up-front cost could help generate more revenue. However, the success of this method relies highly on download figures and your ability to convert more users.

In-app purchasing

In-app purchasing has become a very popular form of generating revenue in recent years, particularly with mobile game developers. The idea is to add extra content to your app that the user has to pay for. It’s important to get the balance right as you don’t want to inhibit the user experience. The aim should be to offer content that isn’t vital to using the app but adds something extra.

Offer subscriptions

Much like using paid apps, this concept relies on cultivating a good customer base and maintaining steady download figures but if done correctly, it is one of the most effective ways of consistently generating revenue. Recently, dating apps have offered subscriptions that provide users with improved experiences and extra features for a monthly payment.

Better marketing

The one thing that all of these revenue-boosting techniques have in common is that they are all useless if you don’t have users. Maximising the number of users you have is the only way to ensure your advertising strategies and payment techniques have an opportunity to generate revenue. Focus on promoting your brand and converting more consumers by developing an effective marketing strategy.

Your homepage is your agency’s first handshake. If it’s unclear, cluttered, or generic—you’re losing potential clients in seconds. Here's what your homepage actually needs to convert visitors into leads. 1. A Headline That Tells Them What You Do “Helping local businesses grow with mobile apps and digital tools.” Make it specific, client-focused, and benefit-driven. If it could apply to anyone, it applies to no one. 2. A Strong Subheadline That Builds Trust “Trusted by 1,000+ entrepreneurs across 20 countries.” This is your social proof shortcut. Numbers work. So do logos and testimonials. 3. A Visual That Shows the Result Use mockups, screenshots, or lifestyle photos. Help visitors see what they’ll get—a mobile app, a dashboard, a website, a client smiling. 4. A Short List of Benefits (Not Features) Launch your digital presence fast No tech skills required Support and tools included Keep it tight. Think “what’s in it for me?” from the client’s point of view. 5. A Clear Call to Action (CTA) “Book a free call” “Get your launch pack” “See what’s possible” CTAs should stand out visually and be repeated 2–3 times on the page. 6. A Simple Contact Form or Button Make it easy to get in touch or book. Remove friction. Don’t ask for more than name, email, and one question. Pro tip: You don’t need to design from scratch.
