1. Schedule regular breaks

Hands up if you’re guilty of being glued to your phone at the weekend or even worse, a slave to your inbox while on holiday? This is a classic route to burnout, with your brain fatigued and energy depleted by being always on. It’s also hard to get the creative juices flowing and be enthusiastic about something when you see it 24/7.

Clocking up 80 hour weeks might give you a sense of accomplishment that you toughed it out and put the time in, but research by the Harvard Business Review sys there’s no evidence that spending more time at your desk means you actually are more productive or accomplish more than those who work fewer hours.

At some point, overworking yourself will lead to exhaustion, a drop in productivity and perhaps even costly mistakes. Get into the habit of scheduling regular breaks both big and small – at lunchtime make a point of leaving your desk and taking a walk for example and book days off. Put them in your calendar so you don’t schedule other events and use that time to give your brain a chance to decompress by taking a trip, indulging in a hobby or simply chilling out at home with a movie or book.

2. Make a goal of learning something new

Whether you’ve always wanted to learn another language or would love to know how to make your own pasta from scratch, the process of learning can actually help you to avoid burnout. It’s a great way to keep your brain healthy, allow it to switch off from work thoughts and can even help inspire you back in the office. Choose something not work related if possible so learning becomes a source of enjoyment and a break from business tasks.

3. Talk

Shouldering the stresses, strains and successes of a new business can be a roller coaster ride and if you don’t share those ups and downs, can quickly wear you out. Talk about your work with a friend, family member, colleague or mentor and use them as a sounding board. Not only does this help to put things in perspective, they may see things differently which can be helpful, inspiring and hugely motivating.
