What were the best new apps of 2018?

Rebecca Appleton • 21 December 2018

Business magazine Fast Company has published its round up of the very best new (and seriously updated) apps which debuted in 2018 and while there are several big name creations on there, there are also a few which mighty surprise you. If you take up an Eazi-Apps mobile app business opportunity in 2019, your own app may well make this list one day! For now, here are those who peaked this year and made waves for all the right reasons…

Gmail

We know it isn’t new but, the Gmail app had a long overdue overhaul this year, it’s first in half a century. It made Fast Company’s top apps list by virtue of an abundance of new features, such as the very James Bond-esque self destructing email, smart reply and universal snooze.

Otter

If you’ve ever been tasked with taking minutes or transcribing notes, Otter may well be your favourite new app of the year too. This clever creation uses speech recognition software to automatically create transcripts – even if you are in a room with multiple speakers.

1Password7

With cyber attacks and data breaches on the rise, 1Password7 is a very useful app to quite literally, have in your back pocket. The app’s Watchtower function will monitor for stolen passwords, flag up weak and too often repeated passwords and even pinpoint sites with two factor authentication.

Cowlines

When you’re in your car, it’s easy to rely on your SatNav and if you’re walking, you can use GoogleMaps. Cowlines is different. This US app, available in over 60 American cities, is designed specifically for those who use public transport and the growing number who ride share, bike share or walk – it mixes and matches multiple modes of transport to tell the user what their quickest and cheapest route to the final destination is.

Obscura 2

Smartphone cameras these days are invariably of a great quality but Obscura 2 takes this a step further with a few DLSR style control features. If you’re passionate about taking great images, it allows you to control settings like manual focus, white balance and exposure. There’s also 19 filters provided too for post-photo editing.

TikTok

TikTok already has over 500 million users in its homeland of China but it’s quickly ascending to cult status elsewhere too. It’s a type of social media network but for short videos – it’s not a new to 2018 app but has undergone lots of changes since buying out the app, Musical.ly.
