Mobile Website Previewer

A person is holding a cell phone in their hand.

With the race to go mobile now well underway, many businesses throughout the UK and indeed internationally, are assessing how to take their business mobile. The most obvious steps are through a dedicated app that can be downloaded via the app stores or a mobile website. With an increasingly high proportion of customers now accessing the internet and information through their mobile device, many businesses are now keen to give their customers a mobile experience.

The focus of today’s blog is to help business owners and app developers test the look of a website on multiple devices all through a simple free tool developed by HubSpot. Although it is still in development, it gives a great insight into how websites differ visually depending on the type of device being used.

How does it all work?

You simply enter the URL of the website you would like to test into the Device Lab. You can literally choose any page of the website to test, from landing pages to a competitor’s site. Some of the things to look out for include, are the images displaying correctly? Is the page being truncated? Does the user need to scroll across the screen frequently?

The tool will also generate a custom report for you based on the percentage of overall internet traffic powered by each device. You could couple this with commonly used tools such as Google Analytics to get an in-depth overview of how a website is performing. Furthermore, the mobile website previewer displays the website on the 6 most commonly used mobile devices, namely iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5, Nexus, Samsung Galaxy, iPad and a desktop view for comparison.

Once you have this information and you have seen the results, there are a couple of things you may wish to consider:

Your site displays well across all devices tested: if this is the case, you may feel as though there is no additional work for you to do from a visual perspective. You can now focus on the content strategy to maximise conversions from mobile devices.

Generally you are happy with the output, but see some areas for improvement: for instance, the website displays better on some devices than others. If this is the case, make a note of any areas you are not happy with and work closely with your provider to improve these for the customer.

You are dissatisfied with the way the site views on mobile devices: if you feel that the website is not giving the end customer a mobile experience, consider rectifying this swiftly. Work with your designer to bring your website to mobile devices across the globe, whether through a simple re-direct script or using a responsive design.
