Best Business Opportunities | Understanding the Power Of Online Reviews – And How To Get Them
The digital world has not only put a staggering array of products and services at our fingertips – it’s also given us access to a plethora of online reviews on everything from books and restaurants to accountancy services and printers. Word-of-mouth and personal recommendations have always played an important part in the purchase decisions of consumers, and now we can all see what other people are saying about our favorite brands and products with reviews, ratings and testimonials.
Back in 2014, an eConsultancy survey found that 61% of customers read online reviews before they come to a purchase decision. By 2017, a similar study by Bright Local found that an enormous 84% of people trust online reviews, and 74% said that a positive online review would help them to trust a local business.
It’s vital that all businesses understand the power of online reviews – they can be incredibly powerful endorsements with a range of advantages. One of the clearest benefits of positive online reviews is their ability to build consumer confidence and trust in your brand. If a consumer were to take a look at your reviews and see an overwhelming majority of 4-5 star ratings and positive sentiments, they’re far more likely to buy from you than they would be from a company with a mass of poor reviews.
This increased consumer confidence can also improve conversion rates. Reevoo discovered that a product with 50 or more reviews can see a 4.6% increase in conversion rates – presumably because of that increased confidence and trust it gives consumers. The same company also found that reviews product an average 18% uplift in sales – proving that businesses can’t afford to ignore the power of online reviews in today’s climate.
How to get online reviews
Now that we understand the power of online reviews, we’re going to look at ways to get or increase them. Check out the following tips to boost your online reviews and reap the benefits of all that consumer positivity:
- Make sure your business is listed on directories where reviews are encouraged. Consumers can’t review you if there’s nowhere to do so! A Google Business page is obviously a must, but you should also consider registering on sights like TrustPilot, which was built specifically to help businesses show that they’re trustworthy.
- If you want reviews, ask for them! That doesn’t mean offering incentives for reviews – that’s bad practice, and businesses can be penalised for this if they’re discovered. When you complete a sale, simply ask the customer for an honest review. Many of them will be positive, and the few negative ones you may receive are a valuable opportunity for improvement and good online reputation management.
- Make it easy for customers to leave reviews. If you have a business app, send a push notification asking for some feedback. Add links to your review platforms when you send invoices or receipts to clients. Place a form on your website that allows customers to review you directly – you can then choose which ones to display on your ‘Testimonials’ page. The key is to remove as many barriers as possible, and make reviewing simple and efficient.
