5 tips to improve the security of your mobile app

The issue of security in mobile apps is an area of growing concern within the mobile industry after a number of high-profile data leaks. Research has shown that 81% of mobile users would convert to a similar app if it had stronger security protocols. This shows how important it is for app developer, especially those just stating out after identifying an app agency business opportunity, to ensure their products are secure on all ends. Here are a few great tips that will help you improve the security features of your app.

Secure your coding

It’s vital that you are securing all of the code within your app from day one. Unlike web apps which have their data saved on secure servers, native mobile apps are stored directly on the user’s device. This opens the door to malicious alterations. Encrypting your app’s source code and network security is essential but you must also focus on testing your code at all stages of the process to avoid leaving gaps or errors.

Secure network connections

Your app will be continuously accessing cloud servers via its API, which can leave it vulnerable to data loss and unauthorised access. Protecting the personal data of your users is essential in the current market so it’s vital that you are taking measures to secure the back door of your app. Be sure to vet potential APIs before choosing one and consider outsourcing to a network security specialist.

Run plenty of tests

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to test your app throughout all stages of the development process. Many developers often skip this vital step in a rush to release their app but, more often than not, this will result in more long-term issues. Use penetrating tests to try and identify any gaps or potential weaknesses. Emulators provide a virtual environment to test your app as it would operate within active operating systems.

Warn your users

Unfortunately, while an app is being installed on a device, there’s not a lot that developers can do to protect the security of their users. This is why it can help to give warnings to consumers and make them aware of the risks that come with things like jailbreaking devices. While these types of warnings aren’t required, it can improve your brand image to give your users’ important security tips.

Use binary code protection

In 2005, around 98% of mobile apps lacked any form of binary code protection, leaving them open to malicious intrusions and modifications. Although this figure has fallen over the last decade, there are still many developers who fail to implement effective binary code protection. It’s vital that you focus on this issue during the development process.
