The mobile apps industry has boomed over the last decade. There are currently more than 6.5 million mobile apps in existence, across numerous platforms and market places. The two biggest names in the app game (Google and Apple) account for around 75 percent of the market. This puts them right at the forefront of popular culture.

The mobile app market continues to flourish. It has been helped by a steady influx of creative, entertaining, useful – and sometimes downright indispensable – creations that help with everything from memory training to hotel booking.  If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next app business opportunity , take a look at the top 5 most downloaded mobile apps of all time:

1. WhatsApp Messenger

This digital chat mobile app has spread across the world like wildfire over the last few years thanks to its ability to connect people from around the globe free from network charges. The popular app allows you to call and message any other user via your internet connection rather than network provider. With free calls and messaging, images and video, WhatsApp is one of the most used apps in the world. There are over 1 billion users spanning the major mobile platforms (iOS, Android and Windows).

2. Facebook Mobile

It’s no surprise that the world’s favourite social media giant is on this list of the most downloaded mobile apps on the planet. Mark Zuckerberg’s social network rapidly grew to become one of the biggest brands on the planet. From there, it was only a matter of time before it dominated the app market too. By its own reckoning, two billion people use Facebook each month, making it the biggest social app in the world.

3. Snapchat

This picture and video sharing mobile app has become one of the most popular downloads on the market. Its popularity comes in no small part to its endorsement by famous icons such as Kim Kardashian and Rihanna. The ability to send self-deleting pictures has appealed to many people, with over 166 million users sending over 3 billion snaps every day.

4. Instagram

Public sharing and self-promotion are popular themes on the list of most downloaded apps and Instagram is a great example. The popular photo sharing platform provides a creative outlet for over 700 million active users every month. With the ability to take, edit and upload photos and videos, Instagram has become a staple app for creatives around the world.

5. Google Chrome for Mobile

It wouldn’t be a complete list of the world’s most popular apps without Google getting a mention. The flagship web browser created by the software giant has been installed on over 2 billion devices and covers all major mobile platforms. Google is known for its simplistic software designs that utilise seamless navigation and easy to use interfaces – perhaps one of the reasons its mobile web browser has become so popular?
