Catch up on the latest industry developments with our round-up

It’s been a busy month in the world of internet and mobile apps, with several big changes coming from top apps. What’s happening with the US TikTok ban? Has WhatsApp got a new update in store for us? Is Spotify finally making streaming audio accessible on Apple Watch devices?
Keep reading for the answers to all these questions and stay up-to-date on the latest developments.
US TikTok Ban Overturned at the Last Minute
After Donald Trump’s threat to ban what is arguably the hottest social media app of the pandemic, TikTok earlier this year, things got pretty complicated. Microsoft, Twitter, and Oracle all got involved in wanting to take over TikTok’s US operations, while TikTok worked on a lawsuit against Trump’s official order.
It looked very doom and gloom for the app last Friday with orders that TikTok would be banned as of 20th September. However, after Walmart and Oracle made an agreement an arrangement with the app, the TikTok ban was halted last minute. It seems that TikTok will continue operating inside the States, at least for now.
WhatsApp’s Multi-Device Update Soon to be Released
WhatsApp has long been a mobile-only app, but recently the company has been working on a well-needed update: the ability to use the app across multiple devices.
According to a new report, the update is nearing release. This will allow users to access the messaging app on the web and desktop without needing a mobile phone. The update should also make it possible to have the same WhatsApp account on multiple mobile devices without linking it to a single mobile number.
These developments are thought to only be in the beta stage at the moment, but the full public release should be revealed soon. Keep your eyes peeled!
Spotify Trialling Streaming Capabilities with Apple Watch
It’s been nearly two years since the Apple Watch version of Spotify hit the AppStore. However, the app has one major downfall: it doesn’t support audio streaming or offline playback. Thankfully, it looks like this might be about to change.
Spotify has confirmed that it has finally started trialling the ability to stream audio without needing connection to an iPhone. Earlier this month, several Apple Watch users noticed the change in features, with a blue beta icon appearing on their devices. However, with Spotify only trialling the streaming for a few users, it is yet to be seen when the app will make audio streaming accessible to all Apple Watch wearers. Let’s hope this update comes sooner rather than later.
